FAQ

We hope to answer questions you have about the Windwalk here. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, use the comments box below and we’ll post a reply as soon as we can.

How far is the Windwalk?
It’s about 7 km to the turbine and back, with a vertical gain of 200 metres.

What happens if it’s raining?
We’re walking rain or shine.

What about parking?
Parking in Harrison St is extremely limited. There’s some parking in the Brooklyn School grounds, off Washington Ave. Or you could park in McKinley Ave and walk up the path. Better yet, catch the bus! The No 7 leaves Kingston for town at 8.30am.

Is it suitable for buggies?
Yes. The route is sealed all the way.

Will my small children make it?
We think so. We’ve tested the route with children as young as three years old – and they enjoyed themselves! If you’re worried, bring a buggy.

What happens if they (or I) run out of steam?
There’ll be some transport available back down from the turbine. But you shouldn’t plan to rely on it.

What about the traffic?
On the route, we’ll have marshalls at all road crossings. The crossings are all sited to give excellent visibility.
The final road up to the turbine from Ashton Fitchett Drive will be closed to traffic for the morning.

What can we walk up next?
On 4 November, Khandallah School are hosting the Kaukau Challenge up Mt Kaukau. You can find out more on their website.
